Sinus Augmentation and Treatment
Sinus Augmentation and Treatment
What is a Sinus Augmentation (Sinus Lift)?
Sinus augmentation, also termed as sinus lift and sinus graft, is part of cosmetic surgery procedure. In this oral surgery process, bone is grafted to the upper jaw, known as maxilla, in the area of molar teeth and premolar teeth. The bone grafting is done to provide support to the base of dental implants. This periodontal disease treatment must be done by a skilled and experienced Periodontist. The surgery is normally performed under local anesthesia and the healing period could extend up to 6 months. The sinus lift and the dental implants could be done separately but most dentists would usually perform them together to avoid the risks of two separate surgical procedures.
Candidates for sinus lift or sinus augmentation could be listed as under.
• Patients who had lost multiple teeth in the posterior upper jaw area.
• Patients who had lost bone or lack adequate bone in posterior maxilla.
• Patients that have teeth missing due to birth defects or genetic causes.
• Patients who had lost maximum number of maxillary teeth and require strong sinus floor to enable multiple dental implants.
• Patients who had ignored long-term teeth loss without proper treatment.
• Patients suffering from periodontal diseases or who had undergone trauma.
Whether it is Los Angeles or any other city or region, sinus lift procedure must be done by experienced and expert Periodontist, after careful assessment of the condition of the patient. The surgeon must decide the proximity of the maxillary sinus to the upper jaw. If it is too close, sinus lift would be required while placing dental implants in the mouth. Normally, the bone grafting is done by taking the required quantity of bone from the body of the patient. However, the Periodontist might use synthetic materials, if this procedure is not possible. A skilled Periodontist would ensure that the implants are placed safely and the sinus is also protected from any possible future damage, by conducting sinus lift along with implant dentistry.
