periodontal disease and Gender
periodontal disease and Gender
In both genders, periodontitis increased with more tooth loss but males are more prone to periodontal disease. In males there is a 10% difference in carotid artery plaque prevalence. Studies have proven that tooth loss and long-term periodontitis are related to subclinical atherosclerosis in men but not women.
A woman needs more unique health care than a man when it comes to periodontal disease. A woman will need to take special care of herself during certain times in her life. Puberty, menopause, menstruation, or pregnancies are all times when a woman is more susceptible to periodontal disease. This is because of all the hormonal variations during a woman's life.
23% of women ages betwwn 30 and 54 have periodontitis and 44% of women ages between 55 and 90 who still have their teeth have periodontitis.
Periodontal disease is a "quiet" disease. A lot of people do not realize they have periodontal disease until it reaches an advanced point; however, at each stage of your life, you can take steps to save your oral health.
Careful periodontal monitoring and excellent oral hygiene is especially important for both genders.
