Bacterial Pneumonia
Bacterial Pneumonia
Periodontal disease manipulates the occurrence of bacterial pulmonary infections. This is due to the movement of bacteria from the mouth into the respiratory tract. A recent study as linked the number of respiratory pathogens (An agent of disease) to known periodontal diseases. It has also been proven that common respiratory pathogens gather in the dental plaque. Once these pathogens are formed in the mouth, they may be transferred into the lungs and cause infection. In addition, oral bacteria may add to the development of a respiratory infection. This is due to enzymes which tear down salivary membranes on pathogenic bacteria delaying their elimination from the mucosal surface.
